As of October 2024, Mesa Urban Garden is a USDA People’s Garden
Our Mission
Mesa Urban Garden (MUG) is a nonprofit community garden located in the heart of downtown Mesa. Our mission is to inspire sustainable urban living by creating a welcoming gathering space that brings people together through gardening, education, community involvement, and creative cooperation. We aim to strengthen families while enhancing and beautifying our community.

Our Goals
At Mesa Urban Garden, we strive to:
- Create a vibrant and beautiful garden space
- Provide affordable gardening opportunities for residents
- Serve as a point of pride for the community
- Offer educational opportunities in sustainability, gardening, and other community needs
- Encourage walkability and engagement in downtown Mesa
- Act as a meeting site for City and community functions
- Provide space for education, events, and the arts
- Grow and share fresh, organic food with the community
- Help reduce urban blight
Our Story: Mesa Urban Garden Groundbreaking Ceremony.
Mesa Urban Garden broke ground on July 5, 2012, thanks to the vision of founders Ryan Winkle, Drew Trojanowski, Liz Paulus, and David Crummey, along with dedicated board members, City staff, and community supporters.
Since then, MUG has blossomed into a thriving space with more than 80 garden beds available for lease to individuals, families, groups, and sponsors. Volunteers also maintain communal beds, with harvests donated to local food banks and shelters.
But MUG is more than just a place to grow food—it’s a hub for connection, learning, and creativity. The garden regularly hosts classes, meetings, art, music, community events, and of course, impressive feats of gardening!
USDA People’s Garden Recognition
In 2024, MUG earned the “People’s Garden” designation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This initiative connects gardens across the country that grow local food, promote sustainability, and strengthen community ties. The name honors Abraham Lincoln, who created the USDA and called it the “People’s Department.” Learn more at usda.gov/peoples-garden.
